Road trip - Day 5
This was supposed to be our least mileage day. We had planned to see Mt. Rushmore, the Wind Caves National Park, and the Badlands National Park. However, the government shut down all the local parks so we had to make a new plan. As we drove we saw signs for Devils Tower and took the 30 mile out of the way detour to see it from a distance. The ranger there told us they couldn't let us drive to the visitor center or hike around. It was still impressive from a distance. Logan and Oma had a fun game of hide n seek at our picnic spot at lunch time. We also had fun at a rest stop checking out the hay bales that were being transported to Nebraska. Back on the road we drove to Custer State Park which was another scenic drive that eventually led us to Mt. Rushmore. Although we couldn't get in, we were still able to snap some pictures from the highway.

Such a bummer that they shot down. Devils Tower is such a long hike for kids but they have awesome ranger talks for kids. Too bad you missed that. We also Loved the wind caves but I am sure someday they will see caves somewhere else.
